Participants on the start line with the first major obstacle - rope climbing

A route with hidden traps

“I did it and I finished.” The Frappadingue slogan sums up this race which has become legendary in only 5 years of existence. On paper, the concept is not particularly terrifying: 12 kilometres, a couple of obstacles and that’s it. In reality, it’s quite another story. The Montreuil-sur-Mer Opale X’Trem is a combination of unpredictable, adrenalin and commando-style physical challenges. Scale an army of straw bales, climb with a cord, flounder in troubled waters, and find yourself suspended in a void. Even so, every year 5,500 people slip on their race bibs for their love of risk.

A setting rich with heritage

The Montreuil-sur-Mer ramparts are some of the best conserved in France. The town, made famous by Victor Hugo with his novel, Les Misérables, is still used as a natural scene for many period films. The Opale X’Trem is one way of discovering this preserved heritage. Particularly the 16th century citadel and the moat, the Queen Berthe tower, the Boulogne gateway, and the beautiful panoramic views of the Canche valley. Once you’ve had your shower, you can wander through the old town, admire the mansions and the Saint-Saulve abbey church.

Contagious laughter

The Frappadingue doesn’t take itself seriously. The time is unimportant. On the other hand, laughter and camaraderie are primordial. Not surprising that there are so many imitations. Today there are about a dozen versions throughout France. In Courchevel, Dinan, Carcassonne and Paris, amongst others. Even in Quesnoy, near Valenciennes, where the Nord X’Trem was launched in 2015. Like in Montreuil-sur-Mer, the environment is ideal for letting of steam. The Vauban citadel abounds with nooks and tricky passages for an unforgettable event.
