Bateau Feu "Sandettie"

Monument (DUNKERQUE)

Spoken languages : anglais

From 1949 to 1989, the lightship was in charge of ensuring maritime safety near the numerous sandbanks in the Dunkirk sector. The duties of the eight-man crew included keeping the ship and its lights in good working order, carrying out and transmitting weather reports, and monitoring the ships crossing nearby. The operating costs and the progress of technology have put this kind of ship to port forever, to be replaced by light buoys. The "Sandettie" is the last French lightship, and was classed as an "Historical Monument" in 1997.
