Bibliothèque

Building (VALENCIENNES)

Spoken languages : français

Behind the library's sober façade lies a treasure trove: this is one of the few old book repositories in France to remain exactly the way it originally was when it was built (1740 - 1743). The decor of this former Jesuit library, with its remarkably preserved portraits and allegorical paintings, is conducive to study. There are also precious illuminated manuscrits preserved here, the most famous of which is the "Cantilène de Sainte Eulalie", a Carolingien manuscript dating back to the 9th century that was seized from the Saint-Amand abbey during the French Revolution. This manuscript contains the most ancient of preserved literary texts in Romance language and the very first poem to be found in French literature.
