Cathédrale Notre-Dame et Saint-Vaast

Cathedral (ARRAS)

Spoken languages : anglais

Formerly the church of the former St. Vaast Abbey, this cathedral was inaugurated in 1848 to replace the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-en-Cité, which was destroyed during the French Revolution. There are several wonders to be found in this neo-Classical building: sculptures of saints from the Pantheon, reliquaries, and also, curiously, a few items in Art-deco style. Daylight comes bursting through its vast, high windows and reflects off the sheer white walls, so that the interior is extremely bright, something that always takes visitors by surprise. The marble furniture bears the stamp of the great revival artists of the 1930s.
