Citadel - fortifications (ARRAS)

Spoken languages : français

Built between 1668 and 1672 under plans drawn up by Vauban, the citadel is a fine example of 17th century military architecture. It is composed of parade grounds at the centre, surrounded by barracks, an arsenal and a Baroque chapel. Outside the enclosure, the "Mur des Fusillés" pays tribute to the 218 members of the French Resistance who were executed by firing squads in the citadel ditches during the Second World War. The citadel complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
