Fishing is an important part of the history of Etaples, and the museum, fittingly located in the former fish market, tells that story. At the beginning of the 20th century, a hundred-odd inshore fishing boats docked at the port, bringing new life and trade to the city and its inhabitants. The museum tells the story of these fishermen's day-to-day lives, starting from collections of objects donated by the fishermen themselves. Thanks to these gifts, the museum has been able to faithfully recreate scenes from inside the fishermen's houses in the old days and recount their traditions and their profession along with that of the sailors and all those whose work was bound to the ocean, like navy carpenter, boat builder or cooper. There are several life-sized boats on show as well. New items are constantly being added to these collections, through donation or acquisition. Nowadays, Boulogne-sur-Mer has taken over as the major fishing harbour in France.
