Statue de Jean Bart

Statue (DUNKERQUE)

The bronze statue of the famous privateer Jean Bart (1650-1702), proudly overlooking the square of the same name, was erected in 1845. It was created by sculptor David Angers, who also sculpted the tomb of Fénelon, which you can see if you visit the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Grâce in Cambrai. It is a statue of a pirate boarding a ship in full attack mode, right arm raised and sword in hand! Each year in February, a crowd of carnival-goers get together to kneel at the foot of the hero's statue, raise their hands to the sky and sing "La Cantante a Jean Bart", the veritable "hymn" of Dunkirk.
