The Belfry of Aire-sur-la-Lys

In 1355, the town’s aldermen were granted the right to built a covered market and erect a "cloquier" (forerunner of the belfry). Made of wood, it burnt several times before being rebuilt in stone.

It collapsed at the beginning of the 18th century due to its dilapidation. Returned to France in 1713 by the treaty of Utrecht, Aire sur la Lys received permission from Louis XIV to build a new belfry in the same year, and this is the one we can admire today.

Of square, baroque style, it was built at the same time as the town hall that is next to it, according to the plans of the engineer Héroguel, who produced a remarkable example of classic architecture. 30 "toises" high (approx. 58 m), it stands on 4 pillars.

The first two floors are made of brick and the next two are dressed stone. There is an impressive view from the top of its 236 steps.
