The Belfry of Dunkerque Saint Eloi

This pale brick tower, finely decorated with Gothic style arches, was built in 1233 by the bishop of Cambrai and lord of Dunkirk to act as a beacon for the community.

In the middle of the 15th century, it was raised to its current size to form the bell-tower of Saint Eloi church. The church was destroyed in 1558 and the intact tower became separated from the church, rebuilt in the 17th century. This belfry, which holds the set of bells of Saint Eloi, was used as a watch tower until 1940.

It is the oldest monument in the town, and a real architectural feat as its foundations only measure one metre compared with a height of 58 metres.

From the top, there is a breathtaking view of the region. Since 1923, it has also been a place of remembrance, one of its sides bearing a cenotaph displaying the names of the 500 Dunkirk "poilus" (soldiers)  who died in the First World War.
