In November 1916, the Allies were preparing to launch a diversion operation, before the offensive of the Chemin des Dames. Their ingenious idea was to employ New Zealand tunnellers to connect the chalk quarries that had been dug underneath Arras since the Middle Ages in order to create a network of underground barracks, able to accommodate up to 24,000 soldiers while waiting for the next offensive. On 9th April 1917, thousands of soldiers emerged from this underground network to launch a surprise attack on the German positions.
The site of the Wellington quarry was designed a place of Remembrance. The above ground section consists of a memorial garden and wall which honours the memory of the regiments of the First, Second, Third and Fifth British Armies involved in the battle of Arras.
Accommodation: The Best Western de L’Univers, a former 16th century Jesuit monastery, is situated in the town centre and offers 38 comfortable and intimate rooms. The dishes served in its restaurant “Le Clusius” make full use of local produce, which are further enhanced by the quality of the service and the prestigious surroundings.
