Les Chemins de mémoire 1914-1918 : the Front

Coming from Nieuport and Ypres, the Front stretches like an immense scar through the region from Flanders to Picardy.

Networks of trenches, and fortified and underground elements are built to help each army defend itself from attack.

The Great War is a war of position and attrition.

The numerous military cemeteries remaining today in this region recall the bitterness of the battles that took place there, the origins of the soldiers and the harshness of living conditions in the trenches.
